Our Vessel | MV Pembroke
Built in 1962 by A.G. Price in Auckland and designed by renowned New Zealand marine architect Athol Burns, MV Pembroke began her life as a day vessel in Milford Sound under the ownership of the government-run Tourism Holdings Group. Following a large-scale divestment of government assets in the late 1980s, she was sold and converted into a dive charter boat, offering SCUBA trips in the spectacular waters of Milford Sound.
In the early 1990s, a group of friends—who already operated a private vessel in Dusky and Breaksea Sounds—came together with a shared vision: to upsize their boat and create a unique way to experience Fiordland’s remote wilderness. From that idea, one of the first live-aboard charter operations in Breaksea and Dusky Sound was born.
Over the years, MV Pembroke has been lovingly restored and upgraded to provide a safe, comfortable, and authentic way to explore the most isolated parts of Fiordland. Today, Fiordland Charters remains proudly owner-operated, with a deep connection to the region and a commitment to sharing its raw beauty with small groups who want a genuine and unforgettable experience off the beaten path.
